#AdvancingChangeMoments: The launch of the Ramadimetja Sophia Mogotlane Early Development Centre in Mookgophong on Mandela Day

Traveling a road together…….

“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” – African proverb.

To celebrate Mandela Day this year, the Cipla Foundation delivered 900 food hampers in Klipheuwel, and also launched the Ramadimetja Sophia Mogotlane Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Mookgophong, Limpopo, in partnership with the Deputy President’s office and the National Department of Social Development.

The ECD campus is a climate-controlled environment with each classroom operating in secure isolation, thus accommodating children with tuberculosis. This high-tech facility is the first of its kind on the African continent.

In the true spirit of Mandela Day, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, Cipla Medpro’s CEO Paul Miller, the Mayor of Mookgopong Marlien Van Staden, the Premier of Limpopo Stanley Mathabatha and the Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi all helped to paint the security house at the ECD centre and plant spinach before addressing the Mookgophong community primary after the launch.

BUILDING ON A GOOD FOUNDATION

The first 1000 days of a child’s life is a critical period for their development.

It is in this formative stage that a balance of good health and nutrition coupled with early learning and stimulation is so important.

“Research shows that during the first 1000 days of a child’s life, their ability to learn, grow and thrive can be profoundly affected by the quality of care, nutrition and education they receive during this period. The purpose of the campus is to ensure that the children of Mookgophong have a healthy space where they can learn, while at the same time, have access to qualified educators and facilitators,” said Paul Miller, CEO of Cipla Medpro.

The principal at the Ramadimetja Sophia Mogotlane Early Childhood Development Centre, Maria Molotsi, said,“I’m feeling very happy. It’s my day today; it’s the first time that this happens in my life and in Mookgophong. We are very excited, my teachers are happy as well as the children. When they saw the Deputy President they were happy. I want to say to Madiba, thank you! You made us proud. You changed everything in South Africa, now we are people, because of you Madiba. Thanks, rest in peace.”

Cipla would like to again thank Maria and her staff for all their hard work and efforts as they work tirelessly to make sure the children have the best possible opportunities available in a very challenging environment.
